Tragedy in Wednesbury: An 82-year-old man has died after a devastating house fire on Holyhead Road, sparking a murder probe by West Midlands Police.
Man Dies After Wednesbury Blaze
Emergency crews rushed to a severe fire early on Sunday, 11 May, at a property on Holyhead Road, Wednesbury. Four people were seriously injured in the inferno, including John Edwards, 82, who was critically ill in hospital. On Sunday, 25 May, police confirmed the heartbreaking news that Mr Edwards had passed away.
“Our thoughts are with Mr Edwards’ family at this difficult time. We remain in close contact with them and they are being supported by our specialist officers,” a police spokesperson said.
Suspect Already in Custody
Andrew Gorrell, 53, from Saltney, Chester, faces arson and three counts of grievous bodily harm with intent. He appeared at Wolverhampton Magistrates’ Court and was remanded in custody. Following Mr Edwards’ death, police are working with the Crown Prosecution Service to possibly upgrade the charges.
The three others injured in the fire remain in critical but stable condition battling for their lives.
Police Hunt Witnesses and Evidence
Officers urge anyone who was in the Holyhead Road area on the evening of Saturday 10 May or early hours of Sunday 11 May to come forward. They’re especially keen on dashcam footage, doorbell videos, or photos that could shed light on the events leading to the fire.
