Murderer Caught After 20 Years: Husband Guilty of Killing Pregnant Wife

A devoted mum’s killer husband has finally been brought to justice more than 20 years after she vanished without a trace.

Pregnant Wife Disappears in Deal

Debbie Griggs, 34, disappeared from her home in Deal back in May 1999 while pregnant with their fourth child. Her body has never been found.

Her husband Andrew, now 56, spun a tale that Debbie was depressed and had left him and their three young sons. But police always suspected foul play.

Cold Case Cracked by Detective Team

Kent and Essex Serious Crime detectives never gave up. They revisited the case several times, finally reopening the investigation in 2018. The Crown Prosecution Service charged Andrew with murder in March 2019.

After a five-week trial at Canterbury Crown Court, he was convicted on 28 October 2019. Sentencing is due on Wednesday 30 October.

The Night Debbie Disappeared

  • Andrew claimed Debbie stormed out after shouting at him about coping with the children alone.
  • Neighbours saw her car leave the house twice in the early hours of 6 May.
  • The family car had bloodstains inside and suspicious alterations were found, including a missing boot lining.
  • Andrew was arrested weeks later but initially avoided charges due to lack of evidence.
  • Later searches and new evidence forced police to charge him years after the disappearance.

Detective Slams Husband’s Lies and Manipulation

“Debbie was a loving mother who would never abandon her kids,” said Detective Chief Inspector Kaye Braybrook. “Andrew painted her as unstable and violent to cover his tracks.

“His conflicting stories and attempts to shift blame made it clear he harboured dark secrets. He has coldly destroyed his wife’s reputation and made 20 years a nightmare for her family.”

“Debbie’s mother died just weeks before Andrew was charged without ever learning the truth. Only he knows what happened to Debbie and where her body is,” added the detective.

“I urge him to do the right thing and give grieving loved ones closure.”

Justice at Last for Debbie Griggs

After two decades of uncertainty, Debbie’s family finally have some peace as Andrew Griggs faces a prison sentence for her murder. The case shows that no crook can outrun justice forever.
