Ex-Top Cop Nick Adderley Cleared of Fraud Claims After Police Probe

IOPC Hits Back: No Case Against Former Chief Constable

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has wrapped up its criminal probe into ex-Northamptonshire Chief Constable Nick Adderley and fraud allegations tied to Staffordshire Police. Their verdict? No case to answer.

The inquiry centered on supposed dodgy dealings around police vehicle maintenance during Adderley’s stint as Assistant Chief Constable at Staffordshire Police. But the IOPC found insufficient evidence of any foul play and confirmed no further action will be taken.

From Military Lies to Fraud Allegations

Adderley was axed from Northamptonshire Police after a sensational misconduct hearing in June 2024 exposed that he had lied about military service. He claimed to have fought in the Falklands conflict and attended the Britannia Royal Naval College—both false.

The fraud probe ran alongside disciplinary actions. Initially, the IOPC passed evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in April 2023, but the CPS declined to bring charges.

Other Officers and Ongoing Inquiries

The IOPC also investigated another serving Staffordshire officer for fraud-related offences, but found no criminality there either. Meanwhile, two former Staffordshire Police staff and two members of the public were arrested in June 2023 as part of related inquiries. Those investigations continue locally without IOPC direction.

“A criminal and gross misconduct investigation involving one serving and one former officer concluded with no case against the former officer. The currently serving officer was also cleared of criminality,” said an IOPC spokesperson.

Career Tarnished Despite Clearing

Adderley, who started as Northamptonshire Chief Constable in 2018, had his career ruined after the exposed fabrications about his military and education credentials. Despite being cleared of fraud charges, the scandal has left a permanent blot on his legacy.

The identity of the other officer involved remains unknown, with no expected disciplinary action.
