Notorious Islamist Extremist Anjem Choudary Isolated in High-Security Jail
Controversial UK Islamist cleric Anjem Choudary has been locked away in isolation at a top-security prison after defying warnings to stop preaching his extremist views behind bars. He is reportedly the first Islamist moved to a newly created specialist unit at HMP Frankland, designed to contain Britain’s most dangerous radicals.
Choudary’s Jailed for Backing ISIS
Choudary was sentenced to five and a half years in September 2016 for urging support for the Islamic State. Alongside co-defendant Mohammed Mizanur Rahman, he posted inflammatory talks calling for allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The former head of the banned extremist group Islam4UK once roared for Islamic law in Britain and remained under the radar for years despite his fiery rhetoric.
High-Security Unit to Quash Radical Influence
A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: “Some of the most dangerous and radicalised extremists are now being housed in the government’s first specialist centre at HMP Frankland – helping stem the flow of radicalisation behind bars and preventing their influence over others.”
He added: “Offenders are placed in the specialist centres if involved in planning terror attacks or considered a national security risk. Those trying to radicalise others or disrupt prison order may also be confined to the unit.”
The Ministry of Justice has kept the identities of other inmates in the unit under wraps, but Choudary’s placement sends a clear message: Britain refuses to tolerate extremism—inside or outside prison walls.
