Leeds Teen Faces Groundbreaking Strangulation Charge
In a West Yorkshire first, an 18-year-old Leeds man has been charged with non-fatal strangulation and section 47 assault. The alleged attack happened on June 9 in Wortley.
First in the UK Under New Domestic Abuse Law
The charge marks the debut use of the Domestic Abuse Act 2021, which came into force nationwide on June 7, 2022. This new offence targets strangulation and serious assault in domestic settings.
Bail Granted But Court Date Set
The young man appeared at Leeds Magistrates on June 10, where he was granted conditional bail. He is due back in court on July 20.
Police Send Strong Warning on Domestic Abuse
“Our officers have secured this charge under the new legislation introduced last week aimed at tackling domestic abuse,” said DCI Sarah Lambert of Leeds District Police.
West Yorkshire Police are zeroing in on offenders using all powers available, especially for cases involving non-fatal strangulation. The offence carries a maximum five-year prison sentence, reflecting its severe danger to victims.
“Non-fatal strangulation is extremely dangerous and can cause severe trauma,” added DCI Lambert. “We are committed to investigating domestic violence perpetrators and fighting violence against women and girls.”
