Warning: Malware on 60+ Android Apps Puts Your Phone at Risk
Dangerous malware lurking in over 60 popular Android apps can control your phone without you even knowing. According to McAfee’s Mobile Security team, once infected, these apps give hackers access to your Wi-Fi history, connected Bluetooth devices, installed apps, and even your GPS location. In short: crooks can track your every move.
Malware Rakes in Cash with Stealthy Ad Fraud
This malicious software doesn’t just spy on you — it also cheats you out of money. The malware runs fraudulent ads in the background, generating cash for hackers while slowing down your phone and hogging data. Android users infected by these apps could be unknowingly funding cybercriminals right now.
More Than 100 Million Downloads — Are You at Risk?
McAfee warns that this malware is hideously widespread, embedded in apps with over 100 million downloads. “Our research team found more than 60 applications containing this third-party malicious library,” said McAfee’s SangRyol Ryu.
Google has been alerted and is cracking down fast. Over 30 infected apps have already been yanked from the Play Store. Developers have been told to fix their apps or face removal. Some have acted promptly to patch the flaws.
No UK Cases Yet — But Stay Alert
So far, the malware mainly targets users in South Korea. There are no reports of UK customers being hit yet, but Android users everywhere should stay cautious. Google keeps removing the infected apps from the Play Store, so you won’t find them there anymore.
McAfee advises all Android users to double-check their phones for suspicious apps. Staying alert could save your phone — and your privacy.
