Man Jailed for 6½ Years Over Fatal One-Punch Christmas Day Attack
A 33-year-old man has been locked up for six and a half years after fatally punching 57-year-old Nick Medlin on the Isle of Wight. Michael John Hudson, with no fixed address, launched an unprovoked assault on Pier Street in Ventnor just after midnight on Christmas Day 2016.
One Punch Ends Life of Well-Respected Father
Hudson pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the first day of his trial at Winchester Crown Court and was sentenced today. Detective Chief Inspector Dave Brown described the tragedy as “a particularly sad set of circumstances where a single punch ended the life of a well-respected father of two who worked for the prison service.”
Nick had been enjoying a Christmas Eve meal and drinks with his family at The Rose Inn when a row broke out after someone swore at Nick. The argument spilled outside as people left the pub. It was then that Hudson threw the fatal punch.
Fatal Blow Causes Tragic Death
The savage punch fractured Nick’s jaw and caused him to fall backwards, hitting his head on the ground. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This is sadly yet another reminder that alcohol-related violence can have devastating consequences,” said Inspector Andy McDonald of Hampshire Constabulary. “Hudson admitted drinking but not to excess. We urge everyone to know their limits and enjoy a safe night out.”
Isle of Wight Battles Alcohol-Fuelled Violence
Alcohol-related crime has been a growing concern on the Island. A range of preventative measures have been trialled in collaboration with pubs and clubs, including banning patrons, switching to plastic glasses, and pub watch schemes.
Hampshire police have increased patrols in hotspot areas and continue undercover operations to tackle underage and excessive drinking. Officers remain committed to reducing incidents of violence linked to alcohol.
Detective Chief Inspector Brown added, “While today’s sentence can never undo the damage, we hope it brings some closure to Nick’s family.”
