Paedophile Football Coach Bob Higgins Jailed for 24 Years
A cunning and manipulative football coach who abused young boys for 25 years has finally been locked up. Bob Higgins, 66, was sentenced to 24 years and 3 months today (Wednesday 12 June) after being found guilty of 45 indecent assaults against 24 victims.
Horrific Abuse Uncovered at Southampton and Peterborough
Higgins preyed on vulnerable youth players from Southampton Football Club and Peterborough United between 1971 and 1996. The vile assaults happened during soapy water massages, training sessions, in Higgins’ home, his car, and at football camps nationwide.
Victims had to endure two gruelling trials before Higgins was finally convicted in May. A previous trial in 2018 convicted him of abusing a 25th boy. Jurors spent over 41 hours sifting through the harrowing evidence before delivering the guilty verdicts.
Emotional Victim Statements Reduce Court to Tears
The packed Winchester Crown Court heard powerful, emotional statements from survivors. One victim told Higgins straight from the witness box: “You are not a God. You are pure evil, a false prophet, a wolf in sheep’s clothing. You took away my dream and replaced it with a living nightmare.”
Another statement was read on behalf of Billy Seymour, a victim who tragically died in a car crash before Higgins faced justice. His mother read:
“You deserve nothing. Having spent time in psychiatric hospitals and battled mental health issues, I am only now coming to terms with what you did to me as a young, defenceless lad who admired you. You have broken me, robbed me of joy, and caused chaos to my family. I hate you most for that. You made me believe there were no good people left. This is closure. Goodbye Bob Higgins.”
Justice Served – But Investigation Continues
His Honour Judge Peter Crabtree praised the victims for their “dignity and fortitude” as he handed down Higgins’ hefty sentence.
Detective Chief Inspector Dave Brown said: “Bob Higgins used his position as a trusted coach to abuse boys for decades. He exploited unsupervised access and the trust placed in him. The impact on these men’s lives is devastating.”
He added: “This sentence shows we take these crimes seriously. We encourage anyone affected by abuse, recent or historic, to come forward. We are committed to investigating thoroughly and securing justice.”
