Met Police Officer Charged Over Offensive WhatsApp Messages
A serving Met officer is facing court after an anti-corruption probe uncovered disturbing messages.
PC Ashley Cooper Charged
PC Ashley Cooper, a response officer covering Southwark and Lambeth, has been charged with two counts of sending grossly offensive messages. The charges stem from offensive WhatsApp messages allegedly mocking a person’s disability.
Court Date Set
Cooper is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 31 January. He was suspended from duty back in October 2023 as soon as the claims came to light.
Met Police Respond
Commander James Harman, head of the Anti-Corruption and Abuse Command, addressed the charges:
“I know many people will be concerned and disappointed to hear that an officer has been charged with a criminal offence. Legal proceedings are now underway and it would be inappropriate to comment further until that process concludes.”
