64-Year-Old Jailed for Broadstairs Bank Robbery Attempt with Fake Gun
Gary Fishlock, 64, was sentenced to two years in prison after attempting to rob a bank in Broadstairs using an imitation firearm. On 29 January 2026, Fishlock entered a branch at Westwood Cross and handed staff a note stating: “I have a gun, put the money in the bag.”
Bank Staff Threatened as Suspect Pretends to Be Armed
A frontline worker described the tense situation, believing the threat to be genuine. Fishlock carried a concealed object in a bag, which he aimed just above knee height at the counter, indicating he was armed. Staff feared for their safety as he shouted demands for cash.
- Fishlock shouted, “I want money, give me money.”
- Employees locked themselves in secure rooms and called 999 at 2:45pm, reporting an armed robbery in progress.
- Despite the alert, Fishlock remained inside the bank for around one minute before leaving and standing outside.
- Firearms officers arrived within 15 minutes of the emergency call and arrested Fishlock.
- No real weapon was found; only an imitation firearm was recovered.
Conviction for Attempted Robbery and Possession of an Imitation Firearm
Fishlock, from Shottendane Road, Birchington, appeared at Margate Magistrates’ Court the following day, where he pleaded guilty to attempted robbery and possessing an imitation firearm in a public place. On 1 April 2026, Canterbury Crown Court handed down a two-year custodial sentence.
Detective Constable Adam Pope said: “This was a frightening ordeal for the staff involved, who had no way of knowing whether the threat was real. Their quick actions ensured their own safety and allowed tactical officers to apprehend the suspect without delay. Fishlock’s behaviour was reckless and intimidating, and this sentence reflects the seriousness of his actions, as well as the emotional damage he has caused to those involved.”
