People Smuggler Jailed for 10 Years After Shocking Van Rescue
Anas Al Mustafa, 43, has been handed a decade behind bars for smuggling migrants into the UK in a dangerous operation busted at Lewes Crown Court today.
Van Packed with Hidden Migrants Stopped at Newhaven
Al Mustafa was caught red-handed after authorities intercepted his van at Newhaven, Sussex, following a ferry crossing from Dieppe, France. Border Force officials and police acted fast when ferry crew heard screams coming from a secret compartment at the back of his van.
The migrants, seven Vietnamese nationals, were crammed into a specially built hideout inside the vehicle – trapped in deadly conditions. The ship’s crew smashed through a false wall to free them.
Victims Hospitalised After Horrific Ordeal
The migrants suffered oxygen deprivation and severe distress. All needed urgent medical care; one victim remained in a coma for weeks. The harrowing discovery exposed the brutal reality of people trafficking.
CPS Vows to Hit Smugglers Hard
“The defendant tried to hide his part in smuggling these people,” said Lauren Doshi from the Crown Prosecution Service. “He went to great lengths to adapt the van for dangerous, life-threatening concealment.”
The CPS confirmed Al Mustafa will also lose any criminal profits thanks to their Proceeds of Crime Division. This case shines a spotlight on ongoing UK efforts to dismantle ruthless people smugglers exploiting vulnerable migrants.
