People Smuggler Jailed for Trafficking Brazilians and Forcing Brutal 12-Hour Shifts
Cleaning Firm Front Used to Trap Vulnerable Victims
A Brazilian woman has been slammed with a three-year jail sentence after she used her cleaning business to smuggle Brazilians into the UK. Ana Lucia Martins, 50, tempted victims with promises of £400 a week – only to lock them into relentless 12-hour shifts without breaks.
Guilty at the Old Bailey
Martins was convicted under the Immigration Act 1971 following a December jury trial. Despite denying charges of assisting unlawful immigration, she was sentenced at the Old Bailey on February 13. The Home Office confirmed she faces automatic deportation after her conviction.
Government Cracks Down on Ruthless People Smugglers
“Martins sold her victims a dream of a prosperous life in the UK – instead, they suffered abuse and exploitation,” said Alex Norris, Minister for Border Security and Asylum.
He added, “This case is a prime example of the lies people smugglers sell to illegal migrants. That’s why we’re restoring order and control to our border, cracking down on incentives that tempt illegal migrants, and toughening enforcement to bring offenders like Martins to justice.”
Martins’ case shines a harsh light on modern slavery disguised as legitimate business, revealing the brutal truth behind some migration routes.
