Man gropes woman on escalator, says he thought she was ex
A 44-year-old man who sexually assaulted a woman at Tottenham Hale Railway Station escaped jail after arguing he mistook her for his ex-partner. Tomas Litvaitis, from Charlton, was caught on the escalator in August 2022 groping the victim’s bottom and vagina through her clothes.
The victim shouted at him. His friend checked if she was okay before they both walked off.
Victim bravely confronts attacker
Not backing down, the woman reported the assault to the station supervisor and confronted Litvaitis outside where he was smoking. She snapped a photo of him and his friend before reporting the crime to police.
Litvaitis was arrested two months later and claimed he touched the victim’s leg by mistake, thinking she was his ex. He even said when she shouted at him, he thought she was mentally ill.
Court slams ‘misogynistic’ excuse, hands community sentence
At Inner 1 Crown Court in January 2024, Judge Jane Rowley branded Litvaitis’s story “not believable.” She noted he is married with children in Lithuania, making his excuse dubious.
Speaking through an interpreter, Litvaitis apologised: “I don’t really know what to say. I’m very sorry. You can’t treat 1 like that. I’m sorry.”
He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 120 hours unpaid work, 30 days rehabilitation, £500 compensation to the victim, and five years on the sex offenders register.
Victim left feeling ‘small and vulnerable’
The woman said the attack left her “vulnerable and disgusted” and that she “should not have to feel this way.” She also revealed she had been sexually assaulted before, underlining the ongoing impact of such crimes.
