Massive Flare Lights Up Fawley After Refinery Structure Collapse
The skies over Fawley were ablaze on Tuesday evening as a huge flare lit up the horizon following a partial collapse of a key refinery structure. Locals said the glowing flare looked like a “large sunset” lighting up the night.
Refinery Hit By Structural Failure in Crucial Gasoline Unit
The drama unfolded when a structure within the Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit (FCCU) partially gave way. This vital piece of kit turns crude oil into lighter products like petrol and liquefied petroleum gas.
“The workings of an oil refinery are very complex,” said a Fawley refinery insider. “But the incident on the Catalytic Cracking Unit hits right at the heart of petrol production.”
Quick Action Prevents Injuries, Flaring Used for Safety
An oil company spokesman said: “We identified an issue on one of our units around 4.40pm on Tuesday. Our onsite teams acted fast, safely shutting down the unit.”
“There were no injuries,” they confirmed. “Flaring is a controlled safety measure to manage excess gas while the unit is isolated.”
Now, the firm is investigating the collapse and planning next steps to get production back on track.
