Police Officer Seriously Hurt on Busy A27 Near Brighton
A police officer was seriously injured after being hit by a passing vehicle on the A27 at Falmer, north of Brighton. The incident happened just after 8.30pm on Wednesday, 25 September, shutting down the eastbound carriageway.
Officer Attends Broken-Down Lorry Before Collision
The officer, from the Surrey and Sussex Road Policing Unit, was helping at the scene of a broken-down lorry since 7.35pm when he was struck as the lorry was about to move again. Thankfully, his injuries are serious but not life-threatening. His next of kin have been informed.
Road Closed, Delays Hit Post-Brighton Game Traffic
The A27 eastbound was shut to allow emergency crews to make the scene safe. The closure caused delays for drivers, including thousands leaving the nearby Amex Stadium after the Brighton and Hove Albion vs Aston Villa cup match. Motorists were advised to avoid the area if possible.
Investigation Underway, Driver Co-operating
Police stressed the collision is not being treated as deliberate. The driver involved was not arrested and is co-operating with investigators. Sussex Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information should contact them online or call 101, quoting Operation Fenwick.
