Mum and Exorcist Held Over Girl’s Death During Shocking Ritual

Two suspects appeared in court Monday over the tragic death of a young girl during an exorcism in Delgoda, a small town 40km northeast of Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo.

The accused – the mother and the woman who performed the exorcism – were ordered detained until March 12 as investigations continue.

Girl Dies After Exorcism Becomes Violent

Police say the mother believed her daughter was possessed by a demon and took her to the exorcist’s home for a ritual to drive out the evil spirit.

According to police spokesperson Ajith Rohana, the exorcist first anointed the girl with oil before repeatedly striking her with a cane. The child lost consciousness during the ordeal and was rushed to hospital, where she died.

Police Probe Dark Rituals After Previous Deaths

An autopsy is set for Monday as police launch inquiries into the woman known locally for performing similar rituals in recent months.

Officials warned the public to beware of such dangerous practices, revealing the girl was not the first to die during these brutal exorcisms.
