Drink-driver who filmed himself ‘smashed’ at wheel sees jail time boosted

Anton Hull’s deadly joyride

Anton Hull, 22, has been hit with a longer prison sentence after causing a fatal crash while filming himself drunk at the wheel. The young driver recorded a shocking video bragging about being “smashed” before smashing his van into a car.

Hull’s dramatic sentence increase came after the Crown Prosecution Service dubbed his original punishment “unduly lenient,” prompting a review by the Attorney General’s Office.

Tragic crash claims young mum’s life

Back in August 2022, Hull was driving a Ford Transit home to Galhampton near Wincanton when he collided head-on with a Volkswagen driven by 29-year-old Sarah Baker. Sarah was critically injured and died at the scene.

Her family described her death as leaving “a gaping hole in our hearts” and condemned Hull’s actions as “utterly selfish.”

Jail term nearly doubled on appeal

Hull initially copped six years behind bars and a nine-year driving ban after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. But the London appeal court quashed that sentence on Wednesday 14 February, replacing it with nine years and three months in prison plus a whopping 12-year, two-month driving ban.

Officer Dai Nicholas said: “My heart goes out to the family of Sarah Baker. She was only 29 years old and had her whole life ahead of her before it was cruelly snatched away.

“Anton Hull made a conscious decision to drive to the pub. He deliberately drank lager and rum. Then he made the catastrophic choice to drive home while clearly unfit. Filming himself on his own phone only increased the risk.”
