Nine years on, Didcot Power Station tragedy still haunts families

Deadly Collapse at Didcot Power Station

Today marks nine years since the catastrophic collapse at Didcot A Power Station in Oxfordshire that took four men’s lives. On February 23, 2016, the partial collapse of the boiler house during demolition sent tonnes of rubble crashing down. Four workers were trapped beneath the debris in a devastating accident that shocked the nation.

The victims were:

  • Michael Collings, 53, from Brotton, Teesside
  • Christopher Huxtable, 34, from Swansea
  • Ken Cresswell, 57, from Rotherham
  • John Shaw, 61, also from Rotherham

Michael Collings was recovered soon after the collapse, but it took over six months to retrieve the bodies of the other three men due to the unstable site.

Families Still Fight for Answers

Nearly a decade on, families are still tormented by delays and unanswered questions. Despite investigations by Thames Valley Police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the exact cause remains unclear, and no charges have been made.

“Nine years without answers is too long. We have been left in limbo, with more questions than closure. Our loved ones went to work that day and never came home. We deserve to know why,” said Julie Cresswell, widow of Ken Cresswell.

“We’ve been living this nightmare for nearly a decade. Every year that passes without justice is another wound reopened,” added Gail Huxtable, mother of Christopher.

Long-Running Probes Stall Justice

The inquest into the deaths has been delayed, held up by ongoing inquiries—one of the UK’s longest-running investigations. Over 20,000 tonnes of debris were removed during an extensive forensic search, but pinpointing responsibility has proved impossible so far.

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson said,

“We understand the pain caused by the length of this investigation, and we continue to work tirelessly to deliver answers to the families affected by this tragic event.”

Tributes Pour in as Community Mourns

Today, tributes flooded in from fellow workers, families, and local officials. A small memorial service took place at Didcot Power Station, where flowers were laid and a moment of silence observed.

Didcot Town Council released a statement:

“We stand with the families today in remembrance of the four men who lost their lives. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten, and we continue to support the call for justice.”

The Fight for Justice Goes On

As another anniversary passes without closure, the families vow to keep pushing for truth. MPs and legal experts demand more transparency and an accelerated inquest. The memory of Michael, Christopher, Ken, and John serves as a stark reminder of the deadly cost of workplace safety failures—and the strength of those left behind.

Rest in Peace.
