Rogue Trader Jailed for Scamming Vulnerable Homeowners of £180,000
A crooked trader who ripped off vulnerable homeowners has finally been locked up. Hughie Smith, 49, from Fernlands Close, has been sentenced after fleecing a trusting couple out of a staggering £180,000. He conned them into unnecessary work on their property, charging sky-high fees for shoddy jobs.
Overcharged by More Than £100,000
Smith’s fraud ran wild, with the couple being billed over £100,000 more than the work was actually worth. He kept pushing for more payments, exploiting their trust and leaving them with a huge financial hole.
Trading Standards Crack Down on Fraudsters
Smith didn’t stop there. He also targeted other victims in the area, prompting Trading Standards to step in. Officials said the lengthy prison term sends a clear message: conning vulnerable people won’t be tolerated.
“This prison sentence should act as a deterrent to anyone thinking they can cheat vulnerable people out of vast sums of money and walk away free,” said a Trading Standards spokesperson.
Beware Door-to-Door Scams – Stay Safe
This case is a stark warning about door-to-door scams. While some tradespeople and companies legitimately sell products this way, many fraudsters use it to steal your money or worse. Most scams involve selling subpar goods or services that you never agreed to or won’t receive.
- Always check the ID of anyone who knocks on your door.
- Don’t call the phone number on their ID card—fraudsters often fake these.
- Instead, look up the company yourself online and call their official number to verify.
Stay sharp and don’t let rogue traders rob you blind.
