Rogue Traders Rip Off Granny for £1,580 in Shocking Scam!

Fraud investigators have slammed ruthless scammers after a vulnerable 80-something woman was conned out of a staggering £1,580. The elderly victim was targeted in Lydd on Thursday, 29 April 2021, when two men offered to jet-wash her driveway for “less than £200.”

Dodgy Deal Turns Costly

The terrified pensioner was taken to a cash machine and handed over £200 in cash. But that was just the start of her nightmare. Shortly after, her family found a shocking £480 cheque had been cashed from her account — plus another £900 withdrawn without her knowledge. Police suspect both were linked to the scammers.

Two Suspects Arrested but Scam Warning Issued

Officers promptly arrested two men, aged 27 and 18, on suspicion of fraud. They were later bailed as investigations continue. The police are urging anyone who’s been hit by similar frauds — or anyone approached by rogue traders — to come forward.

“Vulnerable people are at particular risk of being targeted by rogue traders and other scammers,” said Inspector Andy Brittenden from Folkestone and Hythe Community Safety Unit. “If you’re alone and someone knocks on your door or calls offering services, always check with friends or family before handing over money.”

“Neighbours should also keep a close watch on vulnerable people living nearby.”
