Romford Man Caught Out After Faking £74,000 Porsche Crash Claim
A Romford account manager has been slapped with legal costs after trying to con insurers out of £74,000. He falsely claimed injuries and damages following an alleged road smash involving his £81,000 Porsche.
£74K Fraud Busted by Dashcam
Mr Brooks, 33, insisted he was seated and belted in his Porsche when a lorry smashed into the vehicle. He demanded £74,209 in compensation, broken down as:
- £63,435 for car damage
- £5,000 for personal injury
- £2,400 for medical bills
- £3,374 for lost earnings
But dashcam footage from the lorry told a very different story — showing Brooks standing in the bushes roadside at the moment of impact, not in his car.
Insurer Calls Out Sham Claim
Damian Rourke, a partner at Clyde & Co representing AXA Insurance, slammed the dodgy claim:
“Mr Brooks claimed he was sitting in his Porsche, belted up and injured. The dashcam showed him in the bushes. We still don’t know what he was doing there – but we do know he wasn’t in the car.”
Faced with conclusive evidence, Brooks scrapped his claim and agreed to pay £4,000 towards AXA’s legal fees.
Dashcams: The Fraud Fighters
AXA’s Deborah Talbot hailed the role of in-vehicle tech in busting scams:
“This case highlights how technology is helping us to fight claims fraud. The dashcam footage provided clear evidence that Mr Brooks wasn’t in the car at the time of the collision, avoiding a potentially costly and lengthy court hearing.”
Experts warn that fraudulent motor claims swamp the UK insurance market to the tune of hundreds of millions every year. Insurers now urge drivers to install dashcams — a proven weapon against false claims and a way to protect honest motorists.
