Royal Marine Jailed for Deadly One-Punch Clash in Exmouth
Fatal Street Fight Rocks Exmouth
Joseph Jones, 22, a Royal Marine from Wolverhampton, has been locked up for three and a half years following a deadly street brawl in Exmouth.
The young marine admitted manslaughter at Exeter Crown Court after fatally assaulting 29-year-old Cemal John Yilmaz on December 13, 2025.
Mr Yilmaz was rushed to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth in a critical state but tragically died three days later.
One Punch, Fatal Consequences
The court heard the deadly punch came during a chance encounter between Jones and Mr Yilmaz on Church Street after a night of drinking.
Tempers flared when Mr Yilmaz called Jones “a Brummie.” Jones snapped back, “No, I’m from Wolverhampton,” before landing a swift jab that sent Mr Yilmaz crashing to the ground instantly.
Bystanders tried to assist and called an ambulance, but Jones fled to the Royal Marine Commando Training Camp at Lympstone.
Police Hunt and Court Drama
- Jones turned himself in at Exeter Police Station the next day and was arrested over attempted murder.
- He claimed he never expected his punch to have such deadly results.
- Originally charged with grievous bodily harm, Jones faced a murder probe after Mr Yilmaz died.
- He was released on conditional bail but later pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
- On March 13, Jones was sentenced to three and a half years, eligible for release after two years and four months on licence.
