A cold-blooded killer has been jailed for over 20 years after savagely beating a woman to death in her own home. Matthew Battenbough, 34, launched a vicious attack on 47-year-old Leanne Williams in Townhill, just one week after being released on licence.
Brutal Attack with Frying Pan, Scissors, and Knife
Court heard Battenbough used a frying pan, scissors, and a knife in a merciless assault described by the judge as showing “exceptional ferocity.” Ms Williams was found dead on February 27 after being reported missing. Her torn clothing and blood-stained weapons with Battenbough’s DNA sealed his guilt.
No Motive, But Guilty Plea Lands Lengthy Sentence
Battenbough gave no reason for the savage killing but pleaded guilty to murder. He faces at least 20 years and 10 months behind bars before any chance of release. Judge Paul Thomas KC said Ms Williams suffered “unimaginable terror” in her final moments and slammed Battenbough for behaving “as though nothing had happened” after the crime.
Grieving Family Fear Early Release of Violent Offender
Ms Williams’ family warned against Battenbough’s early release, given his violent record including burglary, battery, and possession of offensive weapons. Her heartbroken mother told the court: “Leanne was my only child… We only really had each other. Since her death, I have become a recluse. She was beautiful, strong, and kind. I trust we will be together someday.”
This chilling case raises serious questions about prisoner releases and the risks posed to innocent victims when dangerous offenders get back on the streets.
