Second Stolen War Memorial Plaque Found After Chatham Churchyard Heist
Police have recovered a second stolen memorial plaque in a daring investigation into the theft of war memorials from a Chatham churchyard. An eighth suspect has now been arrested in connection with the shocking crime.
Bronze Plaques Stolen From Christ Church
The bronze plaques, honouring First World War servicemen, were ripped from their positions at Christ Church on Luton Road around 10pm on Friday, 23 May 2025. The theft has been condemned as a shameful act of desecration.
Recovery Spans Kent and Essex
Following the discovery of one plaque at a scrapyard in Essex on Thursday, 28 May, officers intensified their crackdown across business premises in Kent and Essex. The second plaque was recovered on Friday, 29 May, though it showed visible damage. The memorial has since been returned to the Medway parish, with restoration efforts now underway.
New Arrest and Vehicle Seizure
A 38-year-old man from Chatham was arrested on Friday, 30 May. Police also seized a Range Rover linked to the investigation. So far, eight men have been arrested, including seven previously detained suspects from Dartford and Medway. All have been conditionally bailed as inquiries continue.
Police Lead Speaks Out
“Our team have been really focused on recovering these two items that are so special to the Luton community and the relatives of those who gave their lives in the First World War. We are hopeful that the damaged plaque can be fully restored. Equally important is the task of bringing those responsible for the theft to justice.” – PC Alanya Spiller
The theft sparked outrage across the Medway towns, with local residents and veterans’ groups expressing deep sadness and anger over the attack on these sacred memorials.
