Serial Rapist Ronald Cole Dies Behind Bars After Almost 50 Years

A notorious serial rapist who terrified the nation with two savage attacks has died in prison after nearly five decades behind bars. Ronald Cole, 74, passed away on May 27, 2025, at HMP Full Sutton, the Ministry of Justice has confirmed.

Brutal Crimes Shocked UK

Cole’s horrific crimes were so chilling that he was handed a life sentence with a minimum of 14 years. Yet, he remained locked up for 45 years as he was never deemed safe enough to be released. His offences date back to the late 1970s and involved the rape of young mothers with their babies close by.

  • First attack: Cole raped a 24-year-old mother while her 13-month-old baby slept nearby.
  • Second attack: Just 36 hours after being paroled, Cole struck again, attacking a 25-year-old mother with her infant son beside her.

The sheer brutality and repetition of these crimes sparked nationwide revulsion.

Death Triggers Official Investigation

The Ministry of Justice has confirmed the Prison and Probation Ombudsman will investigate Cole’s death, following standard procedure for fatalities in custody. A spokesperson said:

“Ronald Cole died at HMP Full Sutton on May 27, 2025. As with all deaths in custody, the Prison and Probation Ombudsman will investigate.”

Public Concern Over Monitoring of High-Risk Offenders

Cole’s death comes amid rising public scrutiny over how dangerous offenders are monitored after release. His case remains a stark reminder of the risks posed when violent criminals slip through the cracks.
