Sussex Police Launch Fierce Xmas Crackdown on Drink and Drug Drivers
Sussex Police have kicked off a relentless month-long blitz targeting drink and drug drivers this Christmas. The crackdown follows shocking data showing a sharp rise in serious crashes linked to booze and drugs on the roads.
“Every year, innocent people are killed or seriously injured by drivers high on drink or drugs. The devastation to families is unimaginable. No one should have to get that dreadful knock on the door telling them their loved one has died because of a reckless driver.”– Chief Constable Jo Shiner
Staggering Stats: Road Mayhem on the Rise
- 2024: 70 alcohol-related, 48 drug-related deaths or serious injuries
- 2023: 27 alcohol-related, 19 drug-related
- 2022: 46 alcohol-related, 8 drug-related
Arrests remain sky-high too – with 1,128 drink-driving and 1,021 drug-driving busts already this year.
“I was only around the corner.” “I felt fine to drive.” “I didn’t think I’d get caught.” No excuses. Risk being banned, fined, or jailed. For victims’ families, these crimes are a life sentence.”– Chief Constable Jo Shiner
‘Think Again’ Campaign Targets Drug-Driving Myths
This year’s blitz adds fresh tactics to crush dangerous myths around drug-driving. Many drivers wrongly believe drugs leave their system quickly, unaware they can test positive days or even weeks later.
Last Christmas, Sussex Police made 270 drink and drug-driving arrests. Experts warn many motorists are still over the limit the next morning after a heavy night, making them a lethal risk.
Police and Crime Commissioner Issues Stern Warning: “Don’t Risk It”
“Drink or take drugs then drive, and you’re gambling with lives – yours and others’. The consequences can be catastrophic. Operation Limit will have police on the streets. If you drive under the influence, expect to be caught.”– Katy Bourne, Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner
Bourne also revealed the new Fatal Five Unit will focus on cracking down hard on speeding, mobile phone use, and impaired driving – the deadliest behaviours on the roads.
Shame and Punishment: Offenders’ Names to Be Publicised
Sussex Police will continue naming and shaming convicted drink and drug drivers to deter others from risking lives and liberty.

- Minimum 12-month driving ban
