Sheffield Man Sentenced to Life for Murder of Emily Sanderson
Mark Nicholls, 43, from Sheffield, has been handed a life sentence with a minimum of 17 years and six months for the brutal killing of 50-year-old Emily Sanderson. The tragic murder shook the Hillsborough community earlier this year.
Emily Found Dead in Crofton Avenue Home
Emily’s lifeless body was discovered in an upstairs bedroom on Crofton Avenue around midday on May 30. A post-mortem confirmed she died from severe head injuries, sparking a full-scale murder investigation.
Forensic teams carried out detailed examinations at the scene. Mark Nicholls, also living on Crofton Avenue, was arrested on June 2 and charged with murder a day later. He pleaded guilty at Sheffield Crown Court on September 8.
Family Mourns “Heart of the Family”
“She was the heart of our family, and our heart has been ripped out,” said Emily’s mother, Christine Shann, in a victim statement read out in court. “We will never celebrate with her again, never be held by her, never receive any more of her help and support, hear her jokes, or spend time with her.”
Christine described Emily as an incredible woman, dearly loved by her children, siblings, family, and friends. The family continues to grieve deeply over the devastating loss.
Detectives Condemn Nicholls’ Actions
Detective Chief Inspector Andrea Bowell slammed Nicholls for murdering a daughter, sister, and mother in a fit of rage. She criticised his attempts to shift blame onto Emily and his chilling lack of remorse.
A mandatory referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. The investigation remains ongoing.
