Sittingbourne Paedophile Jailed for 23 Years
A depraved Sittingbourne man, Matthew Smith, has been locked up for 23 years after sexually abusing vulnerable children over many years. His sickening crimes began back in 2008, targeting four young victims in total.
Victims Speak Out, Police Launch Investigation
In 2020, one victim courageously revealed the abuse to a trusted person before reporting it to police. This brave act led to the unearthing of further victims as the investigation gathered pace.
Smith, previously from Sittingbourne, was arrested on 1 March 2020. He faced a slew of serious charges including rape, sexual touching, and sexual communication with a child after contacting another victim online.

Upon release, Smith will spend eight further years on licence under strict supervision. He is also subject to a lifelong sexual harm prevention order and must comply forever with sex offender notification rules.
Police Praise Victims’ Bravery
“Smith is a truly depraved individual who targeted young children for his own sick gratification,” said Kent Police’s Detective Constable Robert Hughes. “He refused to admit guilt and forced victims through the ordeal of a trial.”
“I want to thank the victims for their incredible courage in coming forward. Their bravery has ensured this criminal is behind bars and can no longer harm vulnerable children.”
