Swansea Man Jailed for Posting Reckless 150mph Facebook Video
A Swansea driver has landed a 12-month jail sentence and a three-year ban after bragging online about his insane 150mph joyride along a Welsh dual carriageway.
The Morriston man filmed himself roaring down the A449 in Monmouthshire in a black Rolls-Royce, then plastered the footage all over Facebook. He pled guilty to dangerous driving at Cardiff Crown Court on November 12.
Public Outrage Fuels Fast Police Crackdown
The terrifying video didn’t go unnoticed. Concerned members of the public flagged the clip to GoSafe, Wales’ Road Casualty Reduction Partnership. The footage showed the speedometer needle pinned at a killer 150mph, with the driver’s face caught on camera.
Police used Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and mobile phone data to track down the culprit. The digital trail nailed him behind the wheel at the time the video was taken.
Gambit to Avoid Blame Fails Miserably
After being hit with a Notice of Intended Prosecution, the driver tried to throw someone else under the bus. This led to police probing a possible attempt to pervert the course of justice. Despite this, the bloke eventually owned up to dangerous driving and the cover-up attempt.
Cardiff Crown Court slammed him with a year in prison and banned him from driving for three years. Before getting his licence back, he must pass an extended driving test and cough up £1,000 in prosecution costs.
Police Warn: Reckless Drivers Will Face the Full Wrath
“The vast majority of motorists are safe and competent, and it’s imperative we deal firmly with those who compromise road safety,” warned Superintendent Simon Barrasford of North Wales Police. “Lives can be changed in an instant by poor decisions or momentary lapses on the road. We all share the responsibility to keep roads safe.”
He added that police regularly target dangerous drivers to protect everyone on the roads.
Digital Evidence and Public Vigilance Bring Justice
This case proves how tech like self-recorded videos and phone data are crushing reckless driving. Thanks to sharp-eyed citizens sharing footage, GoSafe acted fast to stop a deadly speed demon in their tracks.
