High-Speed Chase Ends with Arrest After False Plate Land Rover Spotted

A runaway driver was finally caught after a heart-stopping police chase, thanks to a top-notch team effort across multiple departments.

Police Spot Land Rover with Fake Plates En Route to Newark

Just before 1pm on Tuesday, February 14, a police fixed-wing plane tracked a Land Rover Discovery flying down the road from Nottingham to Newark. The vehicle was using false number plates.

Officers on the ground quickly closed in as the Land Rover entered Newark via the A46. The driver wasn’t playing nice – hurtling dangerously and speeding at reckless rates.

Off-Road Escape Attempt Foiled in Horse Paddock

The chase took a wild turn when the Land Rover swerved off the road, tearing down a dirt track into a local horse paddock. But police weren’t fooled.

With fresh intel in hand, officers tracked the rogue vehicle to the end of a field in Coddington, where they finally brought the chase to a halt and arrested the suspect.

Suspect Charged with Multiple Offences

The arrest was credited to the combined efforts of Nottinghamshire Police Roads Policing Unit, Armed Response, Newark Operation Reacher teams, along with the National Police Air Service.

Benjamin Jones, 34, from Valley Road in Carlton, now faces a slew of charges including dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, no insurance, no valid test certificate, failing to stop, fraud by false representation, and possession of cannabis.

Jones has been remanded in custody and is set to appear before Nottingham Magistrates’ Court today (Thursday 16 February 2023).

“These charges are the result of a great proactive team effort to follow and track down a suspect,” said Nottinghamshire Police Constable Marcus Smallman.

“Nottinghamshire Police takes any incidents of dangerous driving very seriously. Our top priority is to keep people safe and our work in this case shows how we will take robust action against anyone posing a danger to others by committing such offences.”
