East London Samurai Sword Killer Jailed for Life Over Brutal Teen Murder

Teen Virtually Decapitated in Savage Hainault Attack

A psychotic rampage with a samurai sword left 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin virtually decapitated as he walked to school in Hainault, East London. Marcus Monzo, 37, launched the violent, unprovoked assault on 30 April 2024, injuring five others during his brutal spree.

Heartbreaking Victim Statement from Daniel’s Father

Dr Ebenezer Anjorin gave a powerful victim impact statement at the Old Bailey. He described the horrifying moment he found his son’s lifeless body:

“He was lying in a pool of blood and had a deep cut from the side of his mouth to the back of his neck. He was motionless. I knew at once that he was dead, but I reached down, called his name, and held his head.”

Dr Anjorin added:

“We will never see him get married or have children. All the normal things parents hope for their children… It has been the worst nightmare experience of our lives.”

Life Sentence with Minimum 40 Years for ‘Savage’ Killer

Mr Justice Bennathan slammed Monzo’s actions as “cruel and savage” while sentencing him to life imprisonment with a minimum of 40 years. Monzo was also handed concurrent sentences for multiple attempted murders, wounding police officers, aggravated burglary, and weapon offences.

The judge praised the “exemplary courage” of officers who risked their lives to stop the rampage, adding:

“No sentence can begin to temper the grief of Daniel’s family.”

Trail of Terror Across Hainault

  • Monzo first rammed Donato Iwule with his van, then attacked him with the samurai sword.
  • He fatally slashed Daniel Anjorin from behind as the boy walked to school in his sports kit.
  • PC Yasmin Mechem-Whitfield was severely injured trying to stop Monzo.
  • Monzo broke into a family home and attacked Henry De Los Rios Polania in front of his partner and child.
  • Inspector Moloy Campbell was slashed before Monzo was finally Tasered and arrested.

Psychotic Episode Linked to Cannabis Use

During the attack, Monzo described the events as “The Hunger Games” and called himself a “professional assassin.” He was found guilty of murder, attempted murder, wounding with intent, aggravated burglary, and possession of bladed weapons — including the samurai and katana swords used in his spree.

Remembering Daniel Anjorin

Daniel was a bright, academically gifted teenager with a passion for music and sports. His tragic death has sparked nationwide grief and urgent calls for tougher laws on bladed weapons.
