Taxi Drivers Reveal Chilling Encounters with Baby Death Couple on the Run
Taxi drivers have opened up about their eerie brush with Constance Marten, 36, and Mark Gordon, 49, as the couple faces trial at the Old Bailey for the manslaughter of their newborn daughter, Victoria. The pair, accused of living off-grid and fleeing authorities, are under the spotlight after hiding their baby following the removal of their other four children.
Hidden Baby Caught on CCTV
CCTV footage shown to the jury revealed Victoria being furtively tucked under Marten’s coat during a stop in East Ham. Snatches of the baby were glimpsed briefly, while further clips showed Gordon buying camping gear — including a unicorn-themed children’s sleeping bag from Argos — in Whitechapel, East London.
Taxi Drivers Speak Out on Suspicious Rides
Taxi driver Abdirisakh Mohamud described a chilling taxi trip with the couple just after midnight on January 8. The pair carried Argos bags and a Lidl bag-for-life, but it was Gordon’s strange questioning about the driver’s religion, trustworthiness, and the cab’s surveillance cameras that raised alarm bells.
“He kept asking if I was Muslim and if I had cameras in the cab,” said Mohamud. “It made me really uneasy.”
Marten’s claim her blue face mask was a “hijab” and Gordon’s excuse of a “problem with his hair” didn’t help. Growing concerned for the baby, Mohamud ended the ride early in Green Lanes, Haringey.
‘Meowing’ Baby Shocks Another Driver
Another driver, Hasan Guzel, recounted the bizarre journey from Haringey to Newhaven, East Sussex. Strange “meowing” noises puzzled him until he realised they came from a baby hidden under Marten’s coat. The couple’s secretiveness and the bleak conditions at their destination added to Guzel’s unease.
Tragic End to the Couple’s Flight
Greater Manchester Police launched a missing person investigation after finding a placenta in the couple’s burnt-out car near Bolton. Arrested in East Sussex, Marten and Gordon were linked to the discovery of Victoria’s body hidden in a Lidl bag inside a disused shed.
Now on trial for manslaughter by gross negligence, perverting the course of justice, concealing a birth, child cruelty, and causing or allowing the death of a child, the couple’s disturbing attempt to evade justice unfolds in court.
