Teen Gunman Sparks Horror at Bangkok’s Luxury Siam Paragon Mall
A 14-year-old boy has been charged with premeditated murder, attempted murder, and illegal firearms possession after a shocking shooting spree at Bangkok’s upscale Siam Paragon mall. Two women are dead, and five others wounded in the chaos that sent shockwaves through the city.
Two Dead, Five Injured in Mid-Afternoon Shooting Frenzy
The terrifying attack unfolded on Tuesday near peak shopping hour. Gunfire erupted, killing two women from China and Myanmar and injuring five more — among them two foreigners and three Thai nationals. Police arrested the suspect later that day, unharmed after he reportedly dropped his weapon.
The teenage gunman is due in juvenile court soon, facing serious charges that could see him locked up for life.
Modified Gun and Mental Breakdown Behind Attack
Investigators revealed the boy had altered a handgun originally meant to fire blanks to shoot live rounds. Authorities fear he suffered a psychological breakdown. National Police Chief Torsak Sukvimol explained:
“The suspect had a breakdown psychologically and it fits an active shooter profile. Initially, I spoke to him to calm him down… he appeared to hear someone speaking to him, he was hearing things, a noise he said told him to shoot.”
The teen, a student at a top private school, reportedly had a history of online gaming. Police are digging into his background to understand what triggered this deadly rampage.
Mall Safety Under Scrutiny After Tragic Shooting
The shooting has revived fears after a horrendous mass killing at a nursery in northeastern Thailand last year, where 35 died. It also echoes the 2020 massacre by a soldier who killed at least 29 people in Nakhon Ratchasima.
Siam Paragon, a prestigious shopping destination boasting luxury brands, an aquarium, cinema, and food court, faces questions over security. Shockingly, reports reveal visitors passed through metal detectors unchecked even after the shooting, raising red flags over safety protocols at the busy mall.
