Teen Jailed 16 Years for Brutal Hastings Stab Attack

Thomas Waeling, 18, has been locked up for 16 years after a savage, unprovoked stabbing of a woman in Hastings last May. The shocking attack left the town reeling.

Victim Airlifted with Life-Threatening Injuries

The victim suffered multiple severe wounds, including a punctured lung from a knife thrust to the chest. She was rushed by air ambulance to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. Miraculously, she survived and later thanked the emergency crews and public for their lifesaving help.

Chilling Details from Trial

At trial, Waeling appeared in a black hooded top with his face covered. He had even warned a friend he planned to stab someone. After the attack, he tried to hide evidence by discarding the knife and changing clothes. Police finally arrested him in Ramsgate after a lengthy manhunt on June 1.

Waeling showed no remorse during the trial, claiming he attacked to “be taken seriously.” He was sentenced to 16 years, plus three years on licence, and received a concurrent nine-month term for carrying a knife in public.

Police and Community Respond

“This was an isolated incident we treated as a top priority,” said Chief Inspector Jayantha Mendis-Gunasekera. “We know it caused huge concern and we were determined to bring Waeling to justice.”

“Thanks to those who gave first aid and to witnesses who helped our investigation. Knife crime is a major force priority. We carry out sweeps, school visits, retailer checks, and run knife amnesties to keep weapons off the streets.”

“If you know anything about knife crime, please report it—online, by phone 101, or in emergencies dial 999. If you don’t want to speak to police, contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Yates added: “We are constantly removing weapons, harmful items, and dangerous offenders from Sussex’s streets. Engaging with young people and community partners is key to diverting them from crime. We offer support and guidance for anyone worried about knife violence.”

Other Convictions Follow Investigation

Alongside Waeling’s sentencing, two others were convicted for perverting the course of justice linked to the probe. Police continue to urge the public to stay vigilant and speak up about knife crime in Hastings.
