Paedophile Sentenced to 16 Years for Horrific Sexual Abuse of Boys
Judge Slams McKenna’s “Immeasurable” Damage
The judge handed down a brutal 16-year prison sentence to McKenna, plus seven years on licence after release. She described the psychological damage inflicted on the victims as “immeasurable” and warned no sentence could undo the harm. She said the scale and length of McKenna’s crimes made this case unprecedented. The judge added he remains a serious danger to the public, especially young men.
162 Offenses Over 30 Years Against Boys Aged 12 to 26
McKenna was found guilty of a staggering 162 offences involving 23 boys and young men aged between 12 and 26. His crimes included indecent assault, voyeurism, and taking indecent images of children. The abuse went on for three decades across several locations, including a local Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club where McKenna was a long-time volunteer.
Trusted Community Man Used Positions to Groom Victims
The prosecution revealed McKenna exploited his roles as a postman and worker at Crossmaglen Credit Union to groom victims. He even befriended parents to get close to their children. Disturbingly, he secretly filmed many victims while naked or partly clothed. Police uncovered over 50,000 photos and videos on his devices after his 2018 arrest.
Cold and Calculating Predator Denied Abuse
Though he eventually pleaded guilty, McKenna initially denied all claims and accused victims of lying. Probation reports showed his sexual abuse was “engrained” in every part of his life. The judge called his attitude “chilling,” quoting him saying, “if it worked out fine, if not go on to the next one,” revealing his cold approach to victimising boys.
Victims Speak Out with Strength and Unity
After sentencing, the victims released a heartfelt joint statement. They showed pride in their strength, dignity, and unity throughout the trial. They urged others who suffered similar abuse to come forward and seek help. The victims also thanked the judge, their families, and the Crossmaglen Rangers community for unwavering support.
