First-ever Kent man charged for refusing to wear a face mask

A 30-year-old man from north Kent has become the first in the area to face charges for refusing to wear a face mask in public.

Mask defiance lands man in hot water

Sam Francis, of Slades Drive, Chislehurst, was charged after Kent Police officers caught him flouting face mask rules at Bluewater shopping centre in Greenhithe. The incident happened at around 1.20pm on September 12, 2020, during a police foot patrol.

Masked-up or face the music

Not only was Francis charged for breaking Covid-19 regulations, but he also faces two counts of assaulting an emergency worker following the confrontation.

Court date set

Francis was bailed and is scheduled to appear at Medway Magistrates’ Court on November 14. The case sends a clear warning to those ignoring face mask laws across Kent.
