Town Hall Turmoil as Bexhill Meeting Cancelled Amid Protests
Protesters Gather Despite Council Scramble
Angry residents of Bexhill-on-Sea showed up outside the Town Hall after the council pulled the plug on a key meeting scheduled for Wednesday, 5th April. The meeting was axed over fears of large crowds intending to confront councillors both inside and outside the building.
Council Cancels Meeting to ‘Protect’ Staff and Public
This wasn’t your usual public meeting about controversial Northeye housing plans – it was the full April Town Council meeting. The council expressed regret but insisted safety came first, citing limited space and the need to protect councillors, staff, and the community.
They promised to hold a fresh public meeting at a larger venue, focusing solely on the contentious Northeye proposal. Details will be announced shortly.
Home Office Sparks Fury With Northeye Housing Decision
The Home Office blindsided Bexhill by choosing Northeye to house asylum seekers, informing the council only last week. The move has sparked deep worry among locals. Both Rother District Council and East Sussex County Council are stepping in to assess how the asylum housing will affect the community. Bexhill Town Council is working closely with them on residents’ behalf.
Plan Still Up in the Air – Legal and Safety Checks Pending
The Northeye proposal isn’t set in stone yet. There are legal hurdles to clear and the Home Office still needs to conduct site and toxicology tests before giving the green light.
Meanwhile, the council urges locals to write to MP Huw Merriman with ideas or concerns. Merriman is in talks with the Home Office and will push the council’s views forward.
Council Commits to Supporting Residents
The Town Council vows to listen and support Bexhill residents through this uncertainty. For updates and to have your say, visit the Town Council Hub on Western Road, email your ward councillor, or check their website and social media channels.
