Star Hobson’s Tragic Death: Mother and Partner Sentenced
Toddler Star Hobson died in 2020 after months of horrific neglect and abuse. Her mother, Frankie Smith, 20, was jailed for eight years for causing or allowing Star’s suffering.
Smith’s partner, Savannah Brockhill, 28, received a minimum 25-year prison sentence for Star’s murder. Home Secretary Suella Braverman has referred Smith’s sentence to the Court of Appeal, calling it “unduly lenient.”
Heartbreaking Details of Abuse
Star died in hospital on 22 September 2020 from “catastrophic” injuries inflicted by Brockhill, described as her mother’s “violent-tempered” girlfriend. A seven-week trial at Bradford Crown Court revealed the toddler endured relentless physical and psychological abuse.
“This is a tragic and extremely upsetting case and my thoughts are with all those who loved Star Hobson,” said Ms Braverman.
“This vulnerable and innocent child was subjected to continued physical abuse, and her mother, Frankie Smith, allowed it to happen.”
Appeal Plans and Legal Limits
While Smith’s sentence is under appeal, Brockhill’s jail term will stand. Ms Braverman explained she could only challenge a sentence if it was “unduly lenient” to the extent of legal error, which was not the case for Brockhill.
The date for the Court of Appeal hearing on Smith’s sentence is yet to be set. The case continues to shock the nation with its grim reminder of child cruelty and the failings that allowed it to happen.
