The arrest is connected to the 2000 killing of journalist Mylvaganam Nimalarajan. His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Detectives are urging anyone with information—especially within the UK’s Sri Lankan community—to come forward and help solve this cold case.

Police Call for Witnesses

Commander Richard Smith, head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, said: “This is a significant update in what is a sensitive, complex investigation. There will still be people who may have information, particularly in relation to the murder of Mr Nimalarajan, and we would urge those people to come forward and help achieve justice for Mr Nimalarajan’s family.”

About the War Crimes Team

The War Crimes Team operates within the Met Police Counter Terrorism Command. Its mission: to track down anyone under UK jurisdiction suspected of war crimes, genocide, torture, or crimes against humanity—no matter where in the world the crime occurred.

These investigations are often complex and require international cooperation to gather evidence. The team works closely with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and other government bodies as part of the UK War Crimes Network.

Their work supports the Government’s ‘no safe haven’ policy, ensuring the UK does not shelter war criminals.
