Ilford Man Nabbed in £50 Million Money Laundering Bust

Abdul Fahad, 41, from Meads Lane, Ilford, was caught red-handed with over £100,000 in cash stashed in his car back in 2018. But that was just the tip of the iceberg. When police searched his home, they found even more wads of cash and uncovered his dodgy jet-setting trips to the United Arab Emirates.

Cash Courier with a Dubai Connection

Fahad claimed the money came from life savings, selling property, and trading stocks. He said he was a lone car trader planning to deposit the cash to buy a car. But that story quickly fell apart.

Investigators linked Fahad to Sathar Khan, a convicted money launderer who was caught trying to smuggle nearly £1.5 million in cash onto a flight to Dubai. Phone messages revealed the pair planned nearly 200 flights between 2017 and 2018. Each trip saw them leaving the UK with heavy bags but returning lighter—smuggling an estimated 379 kilos of cash worth around £5 million.

Organised Crime Cash Run Exposed

Text exchanges showed Fahad and Khan coordinating courier jobs, with one man begging, “Giv me some work too… so I can earn too.” Plans included sending two couriers daily during the summer of 2018. Experts reckon, if successful, this racket could have moved up to a staggering £50 million out of the UK.

Fahad Flees After Guilty Plea

In September, Fahad admitted three counts of money laundering at Southwark Crown Court. Granted bail, he promptly vanished. The court sentenced him to eight years behind bars—without him turning up.

UK and UAE forces teamed up to crack the case. Jason Hulme from the National Crime Agency said: “Fahad was at the heart of a multi-million-pound conspiracy, moving cash linked to serious organised crime internationally.”

He added they’re hunting Fahad, likely hiding in East London around Ilford or East Ham, with ties to Dubai and Sri Lanka.
