New HMP Millsike Named and Set to Slash Energy Bills
HMP Millsike, the new super-prison on the site opposite HMP Full Sutton, has been named after the nearby Millsike Beck river, cementing its local roots. But this prison is no ordinary jail.
First UK Jail to Run Entirely on Electricity
Using cutting-edge solar panels and heat pump technology, Millsike will run solely on electricity. It will use just a quarter of the energy needed to heat old Victorian prisons like HMP Wormwood Scrubs.
This green innovation means taxpayers save over £1 million every year while keeping the public safe.
Prisons Minister Damian Hinds said: “Naming this site puts us one step closer to our new prison playing its vital role in protecting the public and cutting crime. This is a vital advancement towards our goal of creating 20,000 modern, innovative places.”
Boost for Local Economy and Jobs
The new prison is a massive local job creator. Once finished, it will provide over 500 new prison jobs and hundreds more in construction.
Plus, 40% of construction contracts go to firms within 50 miles, pumping money into the local supply chain.
Construction giant Kier is also breaking new ground by hiring around 50 ex-offenders, giving them a fresh start before the prison even opens its doors.
Part of a Bigger Prison Reform Plan
This announcement follows last year’s opening of HMP Five Wells in Wellingborough – Britain’s first ‘smart’ prison. Meanwhile, HMP Fosse Way, a 1,700-place jail in Leicestershire, is set to open this spring.
The government is on track to build 20,000 modern prison places as part of its bold Prisons Strategy White Paper, aiming to cut crime and rehabilitate offenders for good.
