Man Faces Murder Trial Over Baby’s Death in Muirhouse

Lukasz Czapla, 41, stands accused of brutally killing baby Julius in November 2020 at a home in Muirhouse, Edinburgh. Police say Czapla repeatedly shot and smothered the toddler in a horrific attack.

Guilty Plea Refused – Murder Trial Set

During the first day of the trial at the High Court, Czapla was willing to admit to killing Julius but only on a lesser charge of culpable homicide, citing “diminished responsibility.”

“Mr Czapla’s lawyer said if the court refused the plea, a special defence would be lodged,” a court source revealed.

However, prosecutor Alan Cameron told Judge Lord Beckett the Crown rejected this offer. Czapla must now stand trial for murder.

Shocking Details Emerged in Court

  • Prosecutors allege that on 20 or 21 November 2020, Czapla assaulted Julius at an address in Muirhouse Place West.
  • The toddler, born May 2018, was repeatedly struck with a skewer or similar instrument.
  • He was also shot multiple times in the head with an air pistol before having a pillow pressed to his face, causing asphyxiation.

The prosecution claims these acts amounted to murder.

Additional Charges Add to the Case

Czapla faces several other serious allegations, including drink-driving and dangerous driving on Edinburgh’s roads while under the influence of prescribed medication. He allegedly drove recklessly on the A90, forcing other drivers to take evasive action before crashing into another vehicle.

Further charges include possession of drugs such as ecstasy and LSD, as well as illegal possession of an air weapon.

Czapla has pleaded not guilty to all charges. The gruesome trial is ongoing.
