Three Men Banned After Brutal Pub Brawl in Brighton
Three men have been slapped with Football Banning Orders following a violent scrap outside The Ruby pub in Coldean Lane, Brighton. The ugly clash happened after the Premier League match between Brighton & Hove Albion and Luton Town on August 12, 2023.
Violent Fight Erupts Over Train Delays
Thomas Miller, Christopher Stevens, and Stephen Lang were caught up in an explosive fight around 8pm after rival fans gathered at the pub due to train cancellations. The chaos left a 57-year-old Buckinghamshire man seriously hurt, suffering a brain injury that needed hospital treatment. His son and grandson, also at the match, witnessed the shocking assault.
Harsh Sentences Handed Down at Brighton Crown Court
On September 27 at Brighton Crown Court, all three men were given Football Banning Orders banning them from future matches as part of a swift justice move:
- Thomas Miller, 33, a bricklayer from Shoreham, was aggressive towards Luton fans and threw a plastic beer cup. He pled guilty to affray and got a 9-month suspended prison sentence, a 3-year banning order, 150 hours unpaid work, 20 rehab sessions, £500 compensation, and £1,000 court costs.
- Christopher Stevens, 44, a removals operative from Brighton, threw a punch at the victim. He faces the same punishment as Miller – 9 months suspended, 3-year ban, 150 hours unpaid work, 20 rehab sessions, £500 compensation, and £1,000 court costs.
- Stephen Lang, 62, a retail sales assistant also from Brighton, knocked the victim unconscious. Lang admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent and affray. He was handed a tougher 2-year suspended prison sentence, a 4-year banning order, 240 hours unpaid work, 15 rehab sessions, £2,500 compensation, and £150 court costs.
Football Violence Condemned
The court slammed the violence, especially its devastating impact on the victim’s family. Judges made clear these strict measures aim to stop more football-related violence in its tracks.
