Crackdown on Cyber Crooks Running One-Time Passcode Scam Site
The National Crime Agency (NCA) launched a probe in June 2020 into www.OTP.Agency, a shady paid subscription site aiding cyber criminals.
Helping Hackers Bypass Bank Security
The website helped crooks socially engineer victims into handing over real one-time passcodes and personal info. This trick allowed hackers to dodge multi-factor authentication and break into online bank accounts.
With access granted, fraudsters carried out bogus transactions, stealing cash straight from victims.
Tens of Thousands Targeted in Massive Scam
Investigators say more than 12,500 people fell victim between September 2019 and April 19, 2023.
Anna Smith, Operations Manager at the NCA’s National Cyber Crime Unit, warns the public: “We have the power to shut down dangerous sites threatening personal finances.”
“Be alert when banking online. Criminals often pose as trusted firms or contacts. If you get odd calls, emails or messages asking for personal info, always verify by contacting the company directly using official website details.”
