Shady Roofers Busted After Targeting Elderly Woman in Chatham

Fake Roof Repairs Spark Police Chase

On Saturday 27 March 2021, police rushed to a home near Melbourne Avenue after a woman in her 70s raised alarm about a potential fraud attempt. The pensioner told a friend at midday that a man was climbing on her roof while two others dangled at her doorstep, demanding cash for unsolicited repairs.

She revealed that the day before, men had turned up offering roof fixes she never agreed to. Sensing a scam, her friend confronted one of the men over the phone and told him to leave. The suspect even threatened to call the cops first.

Cops Nab Trio After Quick Thinking Saves Cash

The suspects fled in a van, but crucially took no money. However, roof tiles had been removed and the damage is still being assessed. Officers tracked the suspicious van to Thanet, where they arrested three men from Gillingham and Leicester on suspicion of fraud.

The trio, aged 21, 34, and 44, were soon bailed pending further investigation.

Police Warn: Don’t Fall for Doorstep Scams

“We’re so pleased the victim refused the work and called a friend,” said Detective Sergeant Marc Cananur of the Economic Crime Unit. “This quick action led to arrests and ongoing inquiries.”

“Keep an eye out for suspicious callers, especially if you live near vulnerable or elderly neighbours. While some tradespeople are genuine, others aren’t. Be cautious about who you let inside.”

Top Tips to Avoid Doorstep Rip-Offs

  • Always refuse any on-the-spot repairs or maintenance offers.
  • Don’t be pressured into agreeing to work — tell them to leave. If they refuse, call 999 immediately.
  • Never go to a cashpoint or bank with a trader; legit ones never ask for this.
  • Use trusted trades from the KCC Trading Standards approved trader scheme, in partnership with Checkatrade.
  • Always get written quotes and verify the tradesperson’s company details.
  • Report suspicious behaviour to Kent Police at 101 or 999 if it’s an emergency.
