Three Teens to Face Murder Trial Over Fatal Attack on Sheppey Beach
Murder Trial Set for January Over Leysdown Beach Death
Three teenagers stand accused of killing 49-year-old electrician Alexander Cashford in a brutal attack on a Sheppey beach. The teens, a 16-year-old girl and two boys aged 14 and 15, appeared at Maidstone Crown Court on 14 August. The youngest boy joined via video link, while the others attended in person.
Mr Cashford died on 10 August after a violent altercation in Warden Bay Road, Leysdown. Police say the attack involved a glass bottle and rocks. Despite CPR by bystanders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Judge Shows Compassion, Refuses Bail for ‘Children’
Prosecutor Craig Evans revealed that the post-mortem is ongoing, but Mr Cashford may have suffered a fatal medical episode, like a cardiac arrest, triggered by being chased and assaulted.
The three defendants, from Essex, were arrested immediately and charged on 13 August. All remain in youth detention after bail was refused. Judge Oliver Saxby KC called the teens “children,” removing his wig and gown to ease courtroom formality, and personally explained why custody was necessary.
Trial and Witness Appeal
The next court date is 6 November for a plea and trial prep. A High Court judge will oversee the trial starting 13 January 2025, expected to last up to six weeks.
Kent Police also confirmed a 12-year-old girl arrested in Basildon linked to the case has now been released on bail.
