Two thugs who launched a vicious, unprovoked attack on a woman in Burgess Hill have been locked up for a total of 31 months.

Late-Night Violence on Church Road

Police were called to several reports of men fighting and causing damage on Church Road in the early hours of 23 September 2020. The situation escalated when reports came in that someone had been assaulted.

The victim, a 47-year-old woman, had left her flat after being woken by the disturbance. She confronted the men about their behaviour – but instead of backing down, one attacker violently struck her.

Barbaric Assault Leaves Woman Unconscious

One man punched the woman, causing her to fall to the ground unconscious. While she lay helpless, both attackers repeatedly punched and kicked her.

The victim was rushed to hospital with serious head and facial injuries and a chipped front tooth.

Justice Served: Sentences Handed Down

  • Charlie Hale, 22, from Welwyn, Hertfordshire, was arrested at the scene. He admitted grievous bodily harm and was sentenced to 19 months in prison at Lewes Crown Court on 20 May.
  • Henry Harris, 21, of Lewes, was later arrested. He admitted actual bodily harm and criminal damage to the victim’s car and got 12 months’ imprisonment on 3 January.

“This was a vicious attack on a woman who confronted the men after seeing her car was being damaged,” said investigating officer Dani Sanchez.

“Harris knocked her to the floor, at which point Hale joined in. The pair showed no mercy as they continued to punch and kick her whilst she lay defenceless and unconscious.”

“Their actions were nothing short of barbaric, and the sentences imposed demonstrate that this sort of behaviour will not be tolerated.”
