HGV Driver Crushed to Death by Runaway Tractor on Narrow West Sussex Lane
A 65-year-old HGV driver has died in a shocking accident after a runaway tractor rolled over him when its handbrake failed. An inquest has revealed the tragic events that unfolded on a tight country lane in West Sussex.
Rescue Attempt Ends in Disaster
Richard Ellis was trying to collect an electricity generator using his pickup and trailer on a narrow lane in Stopham, West Sussex. His vehicle got stuck in a ditch on an incline, unable to reverse out. A farm worker came to help, towing the pickup free with a tractor. But disaster struck when the tractor’s handbrake failed after the towing strap was detached.
The tractor rolled downhill, trapping both men underneath. The farm worker was lucky to escape with minor injuries. Tragically, Richard Ellis died instantly from severe chest injuries in October 2023.
Coroner Blasts Lack of Tractor Safety Checks
At the inquest, Coroner Joanne Andrews revealed the tractor hadn’t been serviced for two years. Its last inspection in 2021 showed no brake issues. However, post-accident inspections found the handbrake pawl was badly worn, likely slipping before the fatal failure.
“It was not a legal requirement for prescribed maintenance or servicing of tractors solely used for agricultural, horticultural or forestry operations,” said Ms Andrews. “Their upkeep depends entirely on owners’ discretion.”
The coroner ruled the death an accident but issued a Prevention of Future Deaths report to the Department for Transport. She warned that without tighter legal controls, more lives could be lost. The department must respond by 22 November.
Urgent Call to Close Dangerous Agricultural Vehicle Loophole
This fatal incident shines a spotlight on a dangerous gap in UK agricultural machinery safety rules. Campaigners and officials are demanding stricter regulations to prevent more tragedies on rural roads.
