Mass Shooting Rocks Michigan Splash Pad: Nine Injured Including Two Kids
A peaceful Saturday afternoon at a Michigan splash pad turned to horror as a gunman opened fire on families enjoying the sunshine. The Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Oakland County became a scene of chaos and tragedy just before Father’s Day, leaving nine wounded, including two young boys.
Gunman Opens Fire, Leaves Children Critically Injured
At around 5pm, a man pulled up to the popular splash pad, stepped out, and began shooting indiscriminately into the crowd. An 8-year-old boy suffered a critical head injury and remains hospitalized in serious condition. A 4-year-old was hit in the thigh with a gunshot wound but has been stabilised. A 39-year-old woman, related to the children, fights for her life with critical injuries to her abdomen and leg.
Other victims, aged 30 to 78, including a husband-and-wife pair and a city employee, are reported in stable condition.
Rapid Police Response and Suspect’s Tragic End
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard praised officers who swiftly arrived at the scene within two minutes, aided by new 911 monitoring technology. Unfortunately, the shooter had already fled.
Authorities later found the suspect dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home in nearby Shelby Township. He allegedly fired around 28 rounds from a semi-automatic handgun, reloading at least twice during the attack.
Sheriff Bouchard confirmed no known connection between the shooter and victims. A handgun left at the splash pad led police to the suspect’s residence, where a SWAT team forced entry after no response from inside.
Community Shaken, Investigation Ongoing
The community reels from this shocking act of violence. Officials continue probing the suspect’s background, including reports from relatives about possible mental health issues. Families now seek answers and healing after a day meant for joy turned into tragedy.
Questions remain on how such a brutal attack could happen at a family-friendly park, a place meant for laughter and happiness.
