Armed Maniac Threatens Town – Young Cops Step Up
Two unnamed officers faced down an axe-wielding madman terrorising Shirehampton last January. The volatile man had threatened a workmate with an axe, smashed his own windows, and was roaming the streets brandishing both the axe and a large knife.
Face-Off on the Streets
When officers arrived, the crazed attacker charged at them. Despite their youth and lack of Taser training, the cops kept calm. They positioned themselves between the man and gathered onlookers, maintaining a safe distance from the swinging weapons.
One officer deployed PAVA spray. It took two doses before the spray took effect, giving them the opening to cuff the frenzied attacker. He resisted fiercely, biting and kicking as they secured the scene.
Heroes Honoured for Bravery
The violent man later got 22 months in prison. Avon and Somerset Police Federation Chair Mark Loker praised the officers’ “real courage” and quick thinking during the fast-paced incident.
“They had to make quick decisions and manage the crowd. Without Taser training, they used what they had brilliantly to detain a dangerous individual. I dread to think what might have happened otherwise – they were both outstanding.”
These officers are now nominees for the National Police Bravery Awards, recognising acts of outstanding courage across England and Wales. They will attend the awards ceremony in London this July alongside fellow heroes from across the country.
